EURAC Seminar on Current Challenges for the EU
Jens-Peter Bonde, member of the European Parliament 1979-2008, hold three seminars on current challenges for the EU at IUE. The author of 70 books on the EU reflected on a broad range of issues such as the economic governance of the Eurozone, refugee management, relations with Russia and the US, Brexit and institutional reforms. In particular, he highlighted the necessity of a more ambitious climate policy to tackle the problem of global warming. As regards Turkey, he expressed his support for Turkey’s EU membership and emphasized that Turkey is already affected by many EU rules, in particular related to trade. Consequently, he encouraged students to take EU lessons, as more EU experts are required to cope with the complexity of EU rules and regulations.
The European Parliament Former Members Association through its “EP to Campus” programme, which is in part sponsored by CANDRIAM, has supported the seminars. In total, 140 Bachelor- and Master-students, faculty of the Political Science and International Relations Department, as well as guests from further universities in Izmir attended the event.
